Kaiser Rolls: The Versatility You Never Knew They Offered

Blog

As a home cook, you've probably gone into your local bakery before and been mystified by all of the different bread choices. For example, when it comes to rolls, there are a large number of different options, and it's hard to know for sure which one is the best for your needed application. One such roll is the kaiser roll. Kaiser rolls are far more versatile than you might think. Here's a look at several things that you can do with those kaiser rolls you see at your local bakery.

Burger Rolls

Kaiser rolls make the perfect vessel for hamburgers. Because kaiser rolls are thicker than your standard hamburger buns, they can hold up to larger, thicker homemade burger patties. Additionally, the crusty nature of these rolls will allow the bread to avoid some of the moisture hazards that lead to traditional buns falling apart.

If you are hosting a backyard barbecue and you plan on grilling hamburgers, visit your local bakery for some fresh kaiser rolls. Your guests will appreciate the strength of these crusty rolls and will enjoy the soft, tender crumb of the roll's center.

Bread Pudding

A good bread pudding needs bread that is structurally sound yet still airy, light, and fluffy. The structure helps to keep the bread pudding from turning to mush while the light, airy bread absorbs the custard mixture to produce the bread pudding texture that you are aiming for.

Kaiser rolls are a great option for this because the crusty outside provides that essential structure while the inside of the rolls are light and airy enough to absorb custard well. However, like with any other bread for bread pudding, you'll want to make sure that you buy and slice the rolls at least one day before you make the bread pudding, or ask your bakery for their day-old kaiser rolls instead. You need bread that's a little bit dried for bread pudding so that it soaks up as much custard as possible.

Garlic Rolls

When you're making a spaghetti dinner, you probably often make garlic bread to go with it as well. If it's spaghetti night in your house but you don't have any more garlic bread, don't worry. If you have kaiser rolls, you have a perfect alternative. Slice your kaiser rolls in half, brush the cut side with a mixture of melted butter, fresh crushed garlic, and a little bit of salt. Place the rolls, cut side up, on a baking sheet. Put them under the broiler for a couple of minutes, until they are toasted and golden brown. The structure of kaiser buns makes for a light, crispy garlic roll that your family will love.
